"Harborne, or Harborn, is a pleasant rural village,
picturesquely situated about four miles SW of Birmingham. It has many neat
houses, and its parish contains about 4000 acres of land, forming that
southern tongue of Offlow Hundred, which is nearly encompassed by
Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Salop. The populous iron and glass
manufacturing village and district of Smethwick forms the northern division
of the parish.
Harborne forms the southern division of the parish, and belongs to the Rev TG
Simcox, Mr Price, and a number of smaller proprietors. Mr Simcox is lord of
the manor.
Smethwick was a chapelry to Harborne and details can be found on the Smethwick
page.
[From History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire,
William White, Sheffield, 1851]
Harborne was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.
It remained a small village on the borders of Staffordshire, until the
Industrial Revolution. The growth of its neighbour, Birmingham, into a major
City had far reaching effects, culminating in a loss of independence as it
was swallowed up as a suburb of Britain's second city in 1891. It now came
under the county of Warwickshire. http://www.geocities.com/lindow_uk/harborne.htm

Brettell ______ , button maker Jamaica Row
"The new public area around St Martin's church will
have close links with the city centre's past.
..
Other old names to reappear will be 'Jamaica Row' and 'Spiceal Street', which
first appeared on plans from 1795. Jamaica Row is believed to have
derived from a pub called the Black Boy after King Charles II, who was
dark-skinned."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/birmingham/webcams/bullring/bullring.shtml
"The site of the center slopes downward toward the
landmark St. Martins church. The new BullRing will restore traditional
walkways that disappeared under the old center and open up a panoramic view
of the church from the top of New Street that was blocked by the old shopping
center. A new civic square will also be built beside the church.

We see the church as an asset, something to use
and incorporate within the project, Utting said. Historic street names
from the 18th century that disappeared during the 1960s urban reconstruction
Jamaica Row, Spiceal Street and Swan Passage (after the earlier Swan Alley)
are being revived for thoroughfares within the mall."

1) Death records of PRs St Martins and St
Mary's?
Joseph Brettell, buried 27 Oct 1824 at St Martins -
Joseph BRETTEL at St Martins (Number 1765) just gives
his name, date of burial as you stated, Abode - St and age 75yrs (b. ~1749)
St Mary's records, as well as name and age, seem to give the street name and
if it is the burial of a child or young unmarried adult -the parents names or
husband's name if the wife has died. Not sure if the wife's name is given if
the husband dies but did notice widow or widower stated sometimes. (I had a
quick glimpse at about the 1820s burials).
2) Where is St Mary's Whittall Street.?
As John Sermon has told you, St Mary's no longer exists but Whittall St is
still there. Go to www.streetmap.co.uk
and search for uk street and type in the name. On the 1841 parish map in the
library I think the parish extended from Steelhouse lane down to Summer Lane.
The other side of Summer lane was St Georges Hockley and and the opposite
side of Gt Hampton St from St Georges is St Pauls Hockley (Jewellry quarter
area). Also at that time St Martins Parish extended all the way up from
Digbeth area, skirting the central area of Birmingham (Colmore Row, New, St
High St area etc, which was St Phillips) to the opposite side of
Constitution Hill and Snow Hill from St Mary's.
3) Where would someone be buried early 1800s from Hockley?
Depends on the Parish. St Pauls, St Georges, St Mary's
or St Martins There are two Cemetaries in the Hockley area of St Pauls but
a) Burials at Key Hill Cemetery , Icknield St commenced
1836. b) Burials at Warstone Lane Cemetery commenced 1848
There were some burials at Bond St Chapel, but not many and I didn't see any
BRETTELS.

My Joseph's offspring were all baptised (as adults) at Bond St Birmingham
Chapel, Hockley in 1804. Would it be likely for Joseph to be buried at
St Martins? What do you think?

Baptists in Birmingham
http://www.bham.de/index_nonconformists.html
[Excerpt from The British Association Handbook of Birmingham,
1886]
It is somewhat singular that two of the oldest chapels belonging to this
body, namely Cannon Street and Freeman Street, have now ceased to exist.
Cannon Street Chapel was built in 1737 on a part of what was then a cherry
orchard (which gave its name to Cherry Street). The original building was
greatly enlarged in 1806. In those days the well-to-do tradesmen of Birmingham
lived in the town, and the town chapels consequently drew their occupants
from the immediate neighborhood. Gradually, however, the old members died,
and their sons and daughters went to live in the suburbs, and so Cannon
Street, which was the flourishing mother church of the Particular Baptists,
dwindled in numbers. Fortunately the site of it was required by the
Corporation of Birmingham, and it was sold for £26,500, and is now occupied
by the Central Arcade in Corporation Street. The purchase money was, under a
scheme sanctioned by the Court of Chancery, expended in aid of several
Baptist Chapels in the town and suburbs.

The Chapel in Freeman Street is sait to have been older
than Cannon Street to which place the worshippers at Freeman Street joined
themselves in 1752, and the edifice itself was taken down in 1856. The next
chapel in order of date was built in Bond Street (near Constitution Hill),
was opened in the year 1786, and was for many years a flourishing church, but
gradually decayed in numbers and influence, and is now occupied by the United
Methodists.
The chief existing places of worship now belonging to
the Baptists are
NEWHALL STREET CHAPEL, originally built in 1791 by the
followers of Emanuel Swedenborg.
GRAHAM STREET or MOUNT ZION CHAPEL, opened in 1824 by the
celebrated Edward Irving. Twenty years afterwards the pulpit was occupied for
some time by the late Geaorge Dawson, and subsequently, from 1851 to 1874, by
the Rev. Charles Vince, whose death was felt as a public calamity.
HENEAGE STREET CHAPEL, of which the foundation stone was
laid 1st August, 1838, to commemorate the emancipation of the West Indian
negroes.
CIRCUS CHAPEL, Bradford Street, opened 1848, so called
because it was formerly a circus.
WYCLIFFE CHURCH, in the Bristol Road, opened in 1861.
CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER, Hagley Road, built by a portion of
the congregation of Graham Street, aided by a contribution of the Cannon
Street trustees, and opened in 1882.
There are also chapels in Guildford Street, Hope Street,
Lodge Road (Hockley), Great King Street, Stratford Road, Spring Hill,
Victoria Street (Small Heath) Warwick Street (Deritend), and Wynn Street
(Grreat Colmore Street).
There is also a chapel belonging to the Particular
Baptists of Calvinistic views in Frederick Street (Newhall Hill), built in
1850 with the proceeds of an old chapel in Bartholomew Street, which was
called the "Cave of Adullam," and removed by the extension of the
railway into New Street.
The General or Arminian Baptists had the chapel in Freeman
Street (now removed), and in September, 1786, opened the existing chapel in
LOMBARD STREET.
About Baptists
they do not believe in infant baptism. The
sacrament of baptism is reserved for adults or at least youths who are old
enough to understand the significance of the rite. My sister was christened
as an infant in the Presbyterian church but had to be baptized again when she
joined the Baptist church recently. Also, Baptists require total immersion of
the body in water rather than just sprinkling water on the head, as in some
other denominations.

Baptists who want to express their desire to bring their
children up in the Christian faith (usually) do so by having their children
"dedicated". They promise to teach their children about Christ,
both by what they explicitly teach them, and by how they live, the
church members also often join in this promise, and then the minister
(and/or others) will pray for them and for their child - that they might be
strengthened to keep those promises, and that God would honour them.
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GENBRIT/1998-03/0889174288
Baptists practise "believer's baptism" -
someone is only baptised after they have professed faith in Christ. Baptists
do not baptise babies or very young children, since it's not possible for
them to have made such a profession. The youngest person I know who was
baptised on profession of faith was about 9. This is unusually young.
Baptismal candidates can be any age though, right up to OAPs. Again, I knew
someone who was baptised (by full immersion) in her late eighties.
